Why Media Tuition is now Important for Dancers More Than Ever.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”25px”][vc_column_text]Traditionally the art of ballet and dance is performed on a stage in front of a live audience, itโ€™s been this way for centuries. Over the last few decades, alongside the advancement of technology, we have seen a huge rise in the digital capture of dance and performance as an avenue to reach and inspire greater worldwide audiences. With the unfortunate closure of theatres due to the ongoing pandemic, it has never been more pertinent for our course of study to have a focus on digital media.

Understanding and producing video for ballet is far more involved than simply pointing and shooting. Our students already understand the choreography and the performance, we then need to teach them to understand the relationship between the specific movement and the camera itself. We have introduced basic awareness of this in early levels of study, but at 6th Form level our students are now taught this as a primary module within their curriculum. Aiming to address the question – who would understand the capture of dance better than a trained dancer themselves?

With on-site equipment provisions and the support of experienced industry guests our new first of its kind course guides our dancers through choreographic skills, provides the technical understanding when using equipment and goes as far as understanding the direction of a media piece. We believe in providing a complete package to broaden a studentโ€™s potential; weโ€™re leading the way in ballet development by preparing our students for a new age of technology and possibility. With years of experience, weโ€™ve come to understand that if an artistic medium is valuable to our artform then we should embrace it with open arms, and in turn set our students up with the facilities and tuition to do the same.

With our Patron, (Northern Balletโ€™s Artistic Director of Digital) Kenneth Tindall overseeing the course, itโ€™s no surprise that such a high level and quality of material is already being produced. As an award-winning choreographer of well renowned ballets such as Casanova & Geisha, as well as his multi award winning film EGO, Kenneth masterfully guides the curriculum and students with enthusiasm, a wealth of knowledge and years of industry experience.

Throughout the course alongside our comprehensive programme of dance training, the students imagine, direct, create and capture their own short dance films. They are then given the opportunity to collaborate with the schoolโ€™s media to publish these and share them to the world via social platforms. Not only does this give our students valuable skills for furthering their own dance careers, but also opens up a wider range of job possibilities in the ever-developing world of dance.

The engagement from students when piloting this one-of-a-kind initiative has been awe inspiring, showing new levels of enthusiasm and dedication to their craft given this brand-new avenue to explore. We just canโ€™t wait to see what our next generation of dancers are able to produce and demonstrate through the medium of film under our careful tuition.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
